The above image is an abdominal radiograph (x-ray) of a horses's lower abdomen, highlighting a moderate amount of sand in the large intestine. Sand can accumulate over time and settle out in the ventral or lower part of the large colon, causing irritation and possibly obstruction. Sand enteropathy is common in our area, and can cause diarrhea from chronic gastrointestinal inflammation. It can also cause colic signs, low protein, and impactions. It can be diagnosed with abdominal radiographs (x-rays), as well as bloodwork and rectal palpation. Prevention is the ideal - feeding on mats and providing psyllium supplementation even during the winter months. This problem can occur even with a gravel-based turnout footing. For the Love of Horses... "The miracle of birth, the care & nurturing of the mare with her foal is something I will never tire of witnessing."
